What is Earth Day and why was Climeworks involved?

It is becoming increasingly visible that our world needs a transformational change. With an increase in global warming and the rising of CO2 emissions, taking action now is needed more than ever. Beginning in the 1970’s the Earth Day incentive has been focused on doing just that; taking measures to encourage people to take care of our climate.

Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. It is a day to think about our planet and what we can do to keep it special; to think about saving water and energy, reducing pollution, recycling, protecting our animals, trees and plants, and generally getting children interested in protecting their environment with Earth Day activities.

For over 50 years now, Earth Day has encouraged and enabled people to take climate action via Earth Day activities. Their mission statement is to enable 1 billion people to take climate action, which is a goal that we at Climeworks also believe in.

This year’s Earth Day theme is ‘Restore our Earth’. Restoring our earth means restoring the climate: this Earth Day Climeworks empowers everyone to multiply their impact and remove as much CO2 as possible.

With your help, we will be able to slow down the increase of CO2 emissions and mitigate climate change. Taking part in Earth day activities can be the beginning of your journey in reducing your carbon footprint. Below we have featured some easy ways that you and your family can get involved.

Clean up plastic in your neighbourhood or local park

One of the easiest and best Earth day activities and ways to connect with the Earth is through cleanups! Helping to clean up any plastic you can find can make a huge difference and can reduce the amount of pollution and harmful debris that makes its way across the world.

Invest in a Climeworks subscription that reverses climate change

To restore Earth, we need to restore a healthy balance of CO2. It is possible to remove historical and unavoidable emissions from the air with Climeworks. With our subscription service you order the removal of carbon dioxide from the air, and you inspire others to do the same. The more people take action now, the better for the climate.

How does the Climeworks subscription work?

Choose a level of climate-positive action that matches your lifestyle and complete the sign up. No strings attached, you can tell us to stop our carbon dioxide removal service for you at any time. Each year, we send you a confirmation of the amount of carbon dioxide removal you have ordered. No middle-men, no unintended side effects: easy and direct climate action.

To remove CO₂ in your name, Climeworks does two things

1) Build and install CO₂ capture plants at sequestration sites where CO₂ can be stored

2) Operate the CO₂ capture plants and hand over the CO₂ to our storage and monitoring partners (in Iceland this is Carbfix), who proceed with underground storage of the CO₂.

Plant a tree!

Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world's wildlife. Not only that, but they also capture carbon, and boost local economies. Talk to your local government about planting more trees and native garden beds in public spaces or consider planting your own on your property!

Reuse & recycle to reduce unwanted waste

The benefits of recycling cannot be understated! The process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products not only reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, creating amazing new products instead, but it also has many other benefits. These include conserving natural resources such as timber, water and minerals too!

There are several ways Earth Day activities you can participate in and can carry on all year round. It is important for us to all do our part in helping to combat climate change and positively impact CO2 emissions by reducing them.

In becoming a Climeworks Pioneer along with participating in Earth Day, you can do your part in eliminating your personal carbon footprint and do your part to help reduce carbon emissions. In coming together, we can help Co2 levels reach a healthier level and help restore a healthy balance.
