A climate-positive world requires us to #actnow. By all means available. This includes removing carbon dioxide from the air in a safe and permanent way. And it includes all of us.
Carbon dioxide is one of the main drivers of climate change. While a certain amount of carbon dioxide is needed for life on earth to flourish, human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, have caused an imbalance: there is now too much carbon dioxide in the air. To reverse climate change, we have to restore a healthy balance of carbon dioxide. To achieve that, two steps are required:
(1) Replacing fossil carbon dioxide in our economy with carbon dioxide captured from the air.
(2) Removing historic carbon dioxide from the air and storing it safely and permanently.
In recent years, climate science has experienced a paradigm shift recognizing that drastic emission reductions alone will not be sufficient. Within only a few decades, we need to achieve a net-zero emissions balance.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides the world with scientific information relevant to understanding climate change. One hundred per cent of their climate forecasts make it absolutely clear that we have to remove carbon dioxide from the air in order to keep global warming below 1.5 °C compared to pre-industrial times.
The climate is changing - and it is already taking a measurable toll. Scientists agree: we need many carbon dioxide removal solutions working together to keep global heating to safe levels.
The European Commission's Green Deal targets "no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050".
Net zero means a healthy balance: the same amount of carbon dioxide that humans emit is removed from the air. A closed carbon cycle is an important way of getting to net zero. Carbon dioxide removal technologies are crucial for sectors that cannot reduce their emissions completely and have no viable alternative to fossil fuels, such as aviation or shipping.
Climate positive means actions that go beyond net zero: emissions that have been emitted are removed from the air as well as additional carbon dioxide. This lowers the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere and helps to restore a healthy balance. The Climeworks carbon dioxide removal solution enables everyone to become climate positive.
There are a several carbon dioxide removal technologies (also known as "negative emissions technologies", short NETs) that can help to restore a healthy balance of carbon dioxide in the air. These include afforestation, bioenergy in combination with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) or enhanced weathering.
Compared to other solutions, the Climeworks technology provides the following assets:
More than compensation: removes carbon dioxide from the air permanently
Smallest land and water usage of all approaches
Know precisely how much carbon dioxide we removed in your name
The carbon dioxide is safely stored by, for example, turning it into stone through natural processes
We want to inspire one billion people to be climate positive. We are convinced that technological development is an important solution contributing to reversing climate change. By providing accessible climate action, we strive to empower as many people as possible. Because we are all in this together. Let's #actnow.
