Our mission

Climeworks empowers people to fight climate change by permanently removing CO₂ from the air with direct air capture technology. We are dedicated to purpose, we are disruptive thinkers, and we are one team.

We develop, build, and operate direct air capture (DAC) machines, which capture CO₂ directly from the air. The air-captured carbon dioxide is permanently removed from the air by safely storing it underground.

Founded in 2009 by engineers Christoph Gebald and Jan Wurzbacher, Climeworks was built with the vision to inspire 1 billion people to remove CO₂ from the air and is now the leader in technological carbon removal.

We're featured as a TIME100 Influential Company 2022 and Global Cleantech 100 Company 2022 and drive a revolutionary technology engineered to solve the most pressing issue of our time.

Our technology

Climeworks removes CO₂ from the air to fight global warming and protect future generations to come. We use direct air capture (DAC) technology to capture carbon dioxide directly from the air, permanently removing it from the atmosphere, so it can no longer contribute to climate change.

The Orca plant

Machines

Our first direct air capture plant launched in 2017, and we now have 15 machines in operation, with the world’s first large-scale plant switched on in Iceland in September 2021.

Technology

Our machines consist of modular CO₂ collectors, which selectively capture carbon dioxide in a two-step process. The CO₂ captured can either be stored or reused as a raw material.

Basalt rock

Storage

Once the CO₂ is captured, it can be permanently and safely turned into stone through rapid mineralization, which is a natural occurrence where the CO₂ reacts with basalt rock.
